He touched the blade of his yakhan against the central prong of his kopar so lightly that it might almost have been an accident, except that he did it twice, tapping his left foot on the floor of the Dancing Bowl. Click-click-tap.

He did it again.

Click-click-tap.

It was a variant of the traditional tribal challenge of thunder and lightning against an unworthy opponent. One of the watching brothers chuckled, and I felt myself flush with anger and embarrassment.

“To first blood!” Brother Merik raised one arm, fist clenched. “Try not to maim each other, please. Go!”

Today’s quote is from The Heart Forger, the second book in The Bone Witch series. My review of the first two books will be up on Monday!

Blighted or not, she intended to kill that man and for me to watch him die. “You talk like a recipe exists to accustom one to death,” I said, bitter.

“Oh, but there is,” she responded. “Take a girl and remove her heart. Add a touch of tragedy and a thirst for vengeance. Divide her into equal parts of grief and rage, then serve her cold. This is not the worst deed you will see before the week is out. If you have changed your mind about our mission, then leave. I am not yet done.”

“I will stay,” I said shortly, rising to my feet. “I will see this through, for good or ill.”

Today’s quote is from The Wrong Stars by Tim Pratt.

Callie took Elena to the observation deck and helped strap her into a seat where she could watch through the viewport. “See that thing that looks like a crystal chandelier crossed with a wedding cake? That’s Meditreme Station.” They were already decelerating, thrust gravity easing off into weightlessness, and the ship’s reaction wheels were spinning to orient them for their approach to the docks.

Stay tuned for my full review tomorrow!

Today’s quote is from The Great Zoo of China, by Matthew Reilly. (Think Jurassic Park, but with dragons!)

Hamish shrugged. “It’s all pretty cool and impressive . . . if you never saw fucking Jurassic Park. Did you see the fangs on those things? How do we know they’re not gonna go all medieval on our asses and start munchin’ on the juicy little humans? I like old-fashioned zoos where they keep the animals in cages.”

And how prophetic those words turn out to be… tune in Thursday for my full review of this thrill ride of a book, and later today for a review of Clock Dance, the second book in Barnes & Noble’s nation-wide Book Club!

well that escalated quicklyToday’s quote is from Well, That Escalated Quickly by Franchesca Ramsey.

Okay, you’re probably thinking, but the internet is full of prejudice and bigotry. What should I do? How do I know if I should call someone out or take the conversation offline? And what am I even supposed to say? You know I’m addicted to Facebook, so don’t even think about telling me to delete my account and spend more time with my family.

I would never tell you to delete your account. (Though you probably should spend more time with your family.) Instead, I made a guide.

Full review will be up next week!

Today’s quote is from The Pisces by Melissa Broder. Lucy is in therapy for love and sex addiction; she gets too obsessive about her lovers.

Of course, I didn’t say a word about Adam. I didn’t want them reprimanding me or giving me any healthy advice. I knew what they would say: I wasn’t supposed to be dating yet. And meeting up with strangers in alleys doesn’t constitute conscious dating. But maybe I didn’t want to be conscious.

Full review should be up next week!
