Right now I’m reading Island of Exiles, which is really cool because bi/pansexuality is considered the norm, and there are three genders – male, female, and ebet, whose pronouns are ey/eir/em. It’s a great book to read for Pride Month!

This little exchange is between the main character and her brother.

“Why are we out here?” Yorri asks as we move. “Do you have a plan?”

“Yes. I’m going to teach you how to be silent.”

Yorri raises an eyebrow. “You’re going to kill me?”

I laugh, and then laugh harder when he rolls his eyes, barely able to suppress his smirk. “Maybe I should,” I taunt. “It might be easier.”

This book is really fun so far!

Friday 56 – To Kill A Kingdom

Today’s quote is from To Kill A Kingdom – because I enjoy predatory mermaids!

The mermaid shakes her head. She has no hair, but the skin on her scalp is a kaleidoscope, and when she moves, the colors ripple from her like light. “Treasure,” she says.

If I ever had patience, it just dissipated. “What are you talking about?”

“Midas is ours,” the mermaid screeches. “We watch and collect and take treasure when it falls, and he is treasure and gold and not yours.”

“What’s mine,” I say, “is for me to decide.”

Today’s quote is from Mortal Engines, by Philip Reeve. It’s my Steampunk book for Litsy’s Booked 2018 Challenge, and my full review will be up tomorrow!

Dog went hurrying ahead to sniff at the stacks of crates and drums: tinned meat, lifting gas, medicines, airship-puncture repair kits, sun lotion, gas masks, flameproof suits, guns, rain-capes, cold-weather coats, mapmaking equipment, portable stoves, spare socks, plastic cups, three inflatable dinghies, and a carton labeled “Pink’s Patent Out-Country Mud-Shoes – Nobody Sinks with Pink’s!

I mentioned in Tuesday’s Top Ten post that I love the character names in this book, but the rest of it is pretty great too!

Friday 56 – Deerskin

Today’s quote is from Deerskin, by Robin McKinley.

“No one, afterwards, could remember where the initial idea of moving the portrait originated, although everyone vaguely, or hastily, guessed that it must have been upon the king’s orders. Because the curious thing was that it was not only Lissar who found the portrait’s magnificence oppressive, or eerie, or . . . no one was willing to pursue this thought because everyone insisted on grieving for the queen and loving her memory; but even the servants no longer went in the receiving-hall alone, when it was not in use, but always at least in pairs. No one ever remarked on this or made it difficult to accomplish; the feeling was too general. And so the beautiful queen stared down, glittering, and her people scuttled by her.”

Today’s quote is from Sing, Unburied, Sing, by Jesmyn Ward. My full review should be up on Monday!

I sling the car around and go faster. The gray SUV has pulled into a driveway, but the driver is waving his arm out the window, and Big Joseph is passing under the tree, stopping at the mailbox I just abandoned, lumbering off his lawn mower, striding toward the box. He is taking something off the seat of the mower, a rifle strapped there, something he keeps for wild pigs that root in the forest, but not for them now. For me.

Friday 56 – May The Fourth Be With You!

ahsoka tanoThe Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice. The rules are simple – turn to page 56 in your current read (or 56% in your e-reader) and post a few non-spoilery sentences.

Today’s quote is from Ahsoka, by E. K. Johnston, who also wrote That Inevitable Victorian Thing.

Ahsoka followed Miara’s gesture and saw a tall Togruta male standing behind the bar. His skin was the same color as hers. His left lekku was mostly gone, though, cut off at the shoulder, and there was scar tissue where the injury had been sustained.

“Farming accident,” Vartan said. “A long time ago. They can give you prosthetic hands and feet, but they can’t do much about your lekku.”

I’ve been meaning to read this book for quite some time, Star Wars Day finally gave me a reason to do so! I’ve loved Ahsoka Tano since she was introduced in Clone Wars. I REALLY need to watch Rebels.
