Library Loot Wednesday

This week was a week for diverse books! I picked up two Young Adult lesbian romances, It’s Not Like It’s A Secret and Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit, one LGBTQ anthology, All Out: the no-longer-secret stories of queer teens through the ages, and one Afro-Latino Pride and Prejudice retelling, Pride. Very excited about all of these!

I took three books back, not intending to pick up ANY new books, but then my husband wanted to peruse the stacks for some reading material, and – well. Needless to say, I checked out more books! Five, to be exact. I’m not good at this game.

So my husband found a Mercedes Lackey Elemental Masters book that neither of us have read, called The Bartered Brides. I found a book I’d seen talked about and is half novel, half adult picture book, Above the Timberline. I got two short story anthologies, Shadowed Souls and Warrior Women, and White Stag, a fantasy written by an autistic author.

My husband checked out four additional books, including The Alloy of Law, which is the very first book I reviewed on this blog!

I picked up two books this week. The first one is Rin Chupeco’s The Shadowglass, the conclusion to the amazing Bone Witch trilogy. I’m SO EXCITED to dive into it, but I have to finish Priory of the Orange Tree first!

The second book I got on a recommendation – I enjoyed The Gutter Prayer, so someone on Twitter recommended The Ingenious to me. It looks pretty interesting.

So this is the first week I’ve picked up books from my new county public library! It’s a much larger branch than my old one, and in a different county. I’m not convinced it’s a better selection than my old county, but we’ll see. I also still have my old library card, so if I really want something, and don’t to wait to have it shipped over through the statewide loan system, I can just check their system too. (And I still have access to their ebooks!)

I picked up four books this week. The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson, Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal, for YARC, The Food Forest Handbook, and Edible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist.

So this is kind of a sad post – I just picked up the last two books from my hold list at my old library. I still have several books out from my old library, that I’ve been told I can turn in at my new county library and they will make their way back to the proper system, but I don’t think I have any further need to go back to a physical branch. I have to get to know an entirely new set of librarians now!

So my last two books from this library are The Priory of the Orange Tree, which is a feminist political fantasy with dragon riders (and a BEAST of a book, at over 800 pages!) and The Suburban Micro-Farm: Modern Solutions for Busy People. I’ve always been interested in homesteading, and I’ve reviewed a few gardening books in the past. (And I have several more on my shelves!) Most of them are about home farming on a tenth of an acre, or a quarter acre – and here I’m suddenly sitting on just under HALF an acre! I’m held back by the chronic fatigue from my chronic illness, but I’m working on addressing that with my doctor and my diet. I’d like to start small with just a couple of pots this year, and maybe grow slowly. I also have a very large black walnut tree towering over much of the property, and there are a lot of plants that won’t grow near those. So I have to do some research.

OH MY GOD I GOT KINGDOM OF COPPER ON RELEASE DAY (last Thursday) FROM THE LIBRARY! I AM SO EXCITED! I LOVED City of Brass, so to get this one on release day, when they normally take a couple of months to get to me, is AMAZING.

I also got The Winter of the Witch, third in the Winternight Trilogy, so I am SUPER excited about that one, too.

My third one this week is Lost Boi, which is apparently a queer retelling of Peter Pan, which pits his lost bois against leather daddy pirates. I am – intrigued.
