Library Loot Wednesday!

SO MANY BOOKS. Between helping Tiger Torre Art gear up for the Maryland Renaissance Faire and leveling my toons through World of Warcraft’s newest expansion, I haven’t been reading as much as usual. I’m also slogging through some nonfiction at the moment, and that always slows me down. You’d think I’d get fewer books from the library to compensate but um…no. I checked out far too many books this week.

My first trip to the library brought home Jacqueline Carey’s newest book, Starless, The Marked Girl, and The Bees.

On my second visit, I checked out Guardian Angels & Other Monsters, Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Rain: A Natural and Cultural History, The President’s Gardens, and Brief Cases. (Though that last one is more for my husband. I might still read it.)

So that’s NINE more book from the library. I currently have TWENTY-THREE checked out. Guess I need to get reading!

Library Loot and Book Mail!

It’s a good thing I read fast and had six books to turn in at the library this week, because I picked up TEN MORE. I also received my Book of the Month box!

I ordered two of the Books of the Month, plus one from May of last year. The Love Interest is the old one, and Sweet Little Lies and Goodbye, Paris, are this month’s books. Sweet Little Lies released yesterday, and Goodbye, Paris released last week.

On my FIRST library visit I picked up Cinnamon and Gunpowder, The Heart Forger (sequel to The Bone Witch), This Will Be My Undoing, Always Never Yours (from my beach read list), Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach (for the “fruit or vegetable in the title” PopSugar prompt), a Wonder Woman graphic novel, and The Top of the Volcano, a collection of Harlan Ellison’s short stories.

My second library visit netted me the second volume of the Wonder Woman set, The Book of M, and Vinegar Girl, Anne Tyler’s retelling of The Taming of the Shrew for the Hogarth Shakespeare series.

Library Loot!

I had a few unexpected books come in this week; I neglected to freeze the holds when I put them in the system, because I was third or fourth in line, so I didn’t expect to get them anytime soon, and surprise! Oops. I need to get busy reading! Which is unfortunate, because at the same time, Tiger Torre Art is gearing up for Ren Faire, so I’m spending more time helping there, AND World of Warcraft is doing pre-expansion things before Battle For Azeroth releases August 13th, so I’m spending more time there! Ack! The five books that came in this week are How to Find Love in a Bookshop, Mislaid, Eloquent Rage, Snow Like Ashes, and our endless numbered days. I’m actually pretty excited about all five of these.

Library Loot Wednesday!

I finally got Binti! There’s been so much hype about this book, I’m excited to finally crack it open. I knew it was small, but WOW it surprised me how small it actually is! I checked out the graphic novel Gotham City Sirens: Union because I freaking love Catwoman, and The Collected Poems of Sylvia Plath because it seems like every female bookworm my age LOVES her and I’d like to figure out why! Is it bad that I’ve never read her? I know she’s a classic, but my go-to poets were Lord Byron and Robert Frost. And Emily Dickinson. And Shakespeare!

Period: Twelve Voices Tell the Bloody Truth looks awesome, especially since the pages (and outside margins) are all colored red as if they’ve been dipped in blood! The Shape of Water is the novelization of the movie, which I haven’t yet seen. I’ve heard the book is better, even though it came after the movie. That was unusual enough to perk my interest! (Also, weird mermaids. So of course I’m intrigued!) The Girl with the Red Balloon was my final pick this week. There’s a bit of time travel, back to post 1980s Berlin, where some people were using balloons to get over the Berlin Wall. There’s apparently a sequel coming out in October.

In other Book Loot news, I received a whole pile of books from a friend of mine who is moving out of state. We’ve been playing D&D together regularly and I will miss her A LOT. This is the stack she gave me:

Library Loot Wednesday

the bone witchI’ve only picked up two so far this week, though I have two more waiting to BE picked up. This week I got The Bone Witch, which is the first in a series that looks pretty cool, and Plotted, A Literary Atlas, which sounded cooler than it actually is. The maps are…odd.

plotted literary atlasI have been hanging out at home and reading a little more than usual – there’s not much else to do when it’s raining as hard as it has been! We’re under all kinds of flood and flash flood warnings. We are luckily at the top of a hill, so we haven’t had any true flooding close to home (though coming home from D&D on Saturday was a little scary). We do, however, have some growing damp spots in the carpet in the basement. Which is my bedroom/living space. Sooooooo that’s troublesome. I’ve got an air purifier and other fans and damp-rid bags, but until the rain stops there’s not a whole lot to be done!

Library Loot Wednesday!

too fat too slutty too loudI’ve only picked up three books this week, and two of them for the same reason. Did you know Book Riot had a Feminist Book Club? It’s called Persist, and they’re just starting their third book. I just discovered it myself, and I’m very excited. It’s being run on Instagram Live, which I know nothing about, so I’ll have to investigate that. I really wish I could watch the previous chats, but apparently they’re only available for 24 hours after they’ve been posted. Which is a shame. Their first book was Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman. The second book, which I don’t have yet, was Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers her Superpower, and their third book is Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution. headscarves and hymensTheir next meeting isn’t until September, so I have plenty of time to catch up. I possibly shouldn’t have checked out Headscarves and Hymens already, since it’s a scheduled reading with meetings online every week kind of book club, but oh well!

trail of lightningThe third book was a bit of a surprise, and it absolutely made my day. Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning came in, and I am SO EXCITED to dive into that! It’s basically Native American post-apocalyptic urban fantasy, and it sounds AWESOME. And that COVER. Unf.

clock dance book clubI also received Clock Dance in the mail, which I pre-ordered from Barnes & Noble. It’s their special book club edition, which we’ll be discussing in stores on August 8th. It does not look like something I’d read normally, so we’ll see how this goes.
